Tell us about your sports & fitness background:
Growing up I played football, wrestling, and golf. I spent a significant amount of time in the gym throughout high school and thought of myself as fit. Unfortunately, somewhere right around college I let myself go to the tune of about 100 lbs. of beer and junk food (go figure).
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
My first WOD was a modified “Cindy” at random box in Houston about a year ago. I was a walk-in and it was extremely embarrassing for me. At that point I was at my largest, right around 300 lbs. and I couldn’t even come close to a single pull-up (think more than TWO green resistance bands needed). The majority of that workout consisted of me lying on the ground gasping for air. It was one of the many “wake-up” moments for me that led me to H-town.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF H-Town (before/after)?
When I started in May 2015, I weighed in at around 260 lbs. and felt miserable. Since then I’ve dropped a much-needed 50+ lbs. I’ve lowered my cholesterol and blood pressure, dropped about 6 inches off my waist, had higher energy levels and better sleep…. Just to name a few.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
One of the biggest changes I’ve seen is my approach to healthy living. I’m cooking more, doing meal prep on Sundays, and eating healthier overall. I’ve cut almost all alcohol out of my daily life (excluding red wine and tequila of course) and I’ve experienced a better quality of life because of it. The mental changes are the ones that count the most and making better decisions helps me lead a healthier life.
Do you have a favorite/least favorite movement/lift?
Favorite: Clean and Jerk
Least Favorite: Thruster
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
I love to travel. I just got back from Peru where, thanks to Crossfit H-Town, I had the physical capability to tackle the 5 day, 50 km. hike through the mountains to Machu Picchu. I enjoy a variety of outdoor activities…specifically fishing, hiking/camping, and more recently (since I can now support my bodyweight) rock climbing. I also play several instruments when I get the time.
Any advice for people just getting started? Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / H-Town moments:
Consistency is the key! Don’t psych yourself out by looking at the WOD before you come into the gym. Just know what days you’ll be there and show up prepared for anything! Don’t be intimated by movements or lifts that you can’t do the first time. There is NO shame in scaling. When I joined in May, the “Elements” class was strenuous for me. As long as you come in and do the work, the results will come. Also, try your best not to compare yourself to others. I still have a hard time reminding myself to not get down on myself because I couldn’t keep up with the guy next to me. Everyone is at a different stage. Remember that and cheer them on. As for a favorite H-Town moment it would probably be ringing the bell after my latest PR on C&J. Its satisfying know you’ve bested yourself.
